Working in a High School

I'm simultaneously reading and teaching Sebastian Junger's, The Perfect Storm. You have no idea how stress-inducing it is to barely keep up with the reading assignments and lesson planning of a book you have to teach and have never read. Coming up with curriculum is like pulling nose hairs. Additionally, now that we head into the home stretch to the end of the school year, my grading picks up. Those deadlines become firmer and more critical to the academic survival of my students, particularly my Seniors. It's tough being an English teacher when you have two kids and a busy life.

In other news, I saw my school's production of Les Miserables Friday night. One of my students sings like a full grown adult man, but still retains that gawky teenager leanness that so often accompanies tall kids. Another kid, the lead in the play, actually looks and sounds ten years older than his age. They poured their souls into it and gave an impressive performance. Typically, you think "high school play" (in this case, a musical), and images of open mic nights in the family living room spring to mind. But, not in this case. They knocked 'em dead.
